Every import decision is the same decision: how much do you want to control versus how much do you want to pay.

FOB gives you control. You pick the forwarder. You pay the freight. If something goes wrong between the factory and your door, you know who to call. The tradeoff is that you pay retail freight rates as a one-container buyer, while a factory that books 50 containers per month pays wholesale.

CIF costs more but simplifies. The factory books the vessel. The factory pays insurance. Your goods arrive at your port. The factory builds their forwarder’s margin into your price, but that margin buys you one throat to choke if something goes wrong. For first orders under 0,000, this is almost always worth it.

DDP costs the most and asks the least of you. The factory quotes one price. You pay once. The goods appear. The premium over CIF is typically 10 to 25 percent depending on the destination. For small orders where logistics complexity would eat your margin anyway, DDP is not laziness. It is math.

The other decisions work the same way.

Inspection: pay a third party 00 for a standardized report you can show a bank. Or pay a local agent 50 for context a standardized checklist misses. The tradeoff is the same. Control versus cost. Standardized versus contextual.

Payment: T/T gives you speed and low fees. L/C gives you bank-grade protection and more paperwork. The smaller your order, the more T/T makes sense. The larger your order, the more L/C earns its fees.

Shipping: sea is cheapest and slowest. Air is fastest and most expensive. Rail is the middle that did not exist a decade ago and is growing faster than either. The framework applies here too. The less you pay, the less timing control you have. The more you pay, the more predictable your supply chain.

Most importers default to whatever their first forwarder recommended. The smart ones look at each shipment and ask: what do I need more from this order, cost savings or timing certainty. The answer changes per order. The framework does not.
