TL;DR: On June 10, 2026, Hainan’s Yangpu Port launched a new container route connecting China → Vietnam → Singapore → Mundra, India. For importers shipping to India, this means more capacity, competitive rates, and an alternative to congested mainline ports.
Yangpu Port — Hainan’s largest cargo hub — opened its second South Asia container service on June 10. The route: Yangpu → Haiphong (Vietnam) → Singapore → Mundra (India).
Why This Matters for India Importers
Two numbers: India is now China’s fastest-growing major trade partner. Bilateral trade is on pace to exceed $140 billion in 2026. And until recently, most China-India container traffic flowed through just a handful of congested mainline ports — Ningbo, Shanghai, Shenzhen.
The new Yangpu-Mundra route changes the map in three ways:
1. An alternative to congested mainline ports. With 650 ships waiting at major Chinese ports in early June, smaller ports like Yangpu offer faster turnaround. If your factory is in southern or southwestern China, Yangpu may be closer and less congested than Shanghai or Ningbo.
2. Competitive pricing. New routes mean carriers compete for market share. The Mundra service is entering a route dominated by established lines — expect introductory rates to be aggressive. If you’re shipping to India, get a quote on this route alongside your usual carrier.
3. Hainan Free Trade Port benefits. Goods transshipped through Hainan’s FTP zones enjoy streamlined customs procedures and reduced paperwork. The FTP designation is more than a label — it changes the physical flow of goods through the port, reducing clearance times.
The Route Details
The new service calls at Yangpu (China) → Haiphong (Vietnam) → Singapore → Mundra (India). For importers shipping from Chinese factories to western Indian ports, total transit time is competitive with existing services — roughly 12-16 days depending on dwell time at Singapore.
New routes don’t get the attention that tariffs get. But a faster, cheaper shipping line to India puts more money in your pocket than any trade negotiation. If you import to India, call your forwarder and ask about the Yangpu-Mundra service.
