TL;DR: Outdoor switchgear is not indoor switchgear in a weatherproof box. IP ratings, busbar sizing, arc fault protection, and corrosion resistance all change when equipment moves outside. Here is what to specify, what to verify, and what corners some factories cut.
I spent 13 years in power equipment before becoming a sourcing partner. Outdoor switchgear is one of the categories where the gap between meets spec and actually works for 15 years outdoors is widest.
The Specifications That Matter
Most importers focus on voltage and current ratings. Those matter. But for outdoor equipment, five other specifications determine whether your switchgear survives the first monsoon season.

What Some Factories Cut
These are not scams. They are cost reductions that technically meet the spec sheet but fail in the real world.
Enclosure thickness. Spec says 2mm steel. Factory uses 1.5mm. It passes visual inspection. After three years of thermal cycling the thinner steel develops hairline cracks at the weld points. Water gets in. Rust begins. By year five, the enclosure needs replacement.
Paint quality. Spec says powder coated. Factory uses a thinner coat than specified. Looks fine on delivery. Two years of UV exposure later, the coating chalks and flakes. The enclosure underneath starts rusting.
Busbar material. Spec says copper. Factory substitutes copper-clad aluminum. It is cheaper, lighter, and conducts electricity adequately for the first few years. But aluminum oxidizes differently than copper. The joints loosen. Resistance increases. Heat builds up. Five years in, a connection fails.
How to Verify Before You Buy
Ask the factory for three things before ordering:
- A bill of materials for the enclosure showing steel grade, thickness, coating specification.
- Salt spray test results. If the factory has never salt-spray tested their enclosures, they do not know how their coating performs in coastal environments.
- Reference installations. Ask for photos of the same model in service for 3 years or more. If they hesitate, they do not have any.
Outdoor switchgear costs more than indoor for a reason. The importers who specify it properly get 15 years of reliable service. The ones who do not get a replacement order and an angry customer.
